Ongoing Projects:
G.A.M.E. (God's Aid in Mission Experience) - This is a community combined effort by Galilee Christian Church, Jefferson First Methodist Church, and Bethany Methodist Church. The youth groups from these three churches will be working June 8-12, 2011 in Jackson County. They will target local people who have home needs/repairs, etc. Our church families can become involved by donating their time, food, or monies to assist this extensive mission. For details, contact our Youth director, Benjamin Clark at the church office.
Relay for Life - This is an annual event in early Summer for the American Cancer Society in our county. This year the event is June 3-4, 2011 at Gresham Motorsports Park, Jefferson. We have a church team and invite you to become involved to help the fight against cancer. Contact the church office for details.
Continued Projects:
Red Bird Mission - This is a Methodist supported work camp that provides varied services for the Appalachian people. Our church has had construction teams and dental groups provide help for the people over the past 5 years. We are scheduled for a trip to Red Bird on Sept. 18-25, 2011. Martha Crisler is the team leader, and this is a great mission trip for all ages: youth (with a parent), young adults, adults! There are many ways to serve at Red Bird. If you'd like to check them out, go to www.rbmission.org
Campbell Soup Labels - Save your Campbell Soup Labels as these are important to the Red Bird Mission. They are able to purchase many items with these labels including passenger vans.
Arrendale Prison Ministry - Martha Crisler continues to help with this project serving in a Kairos Ministry .
Our Daily Bread - This is a continued monthly food project where members of our church prepare and serve a meal at the Oconee Methodist Church in Athens. Approximately 120 persons are fed each day at this church. Contact: Marion Mahaffey or Evelyn Carloss.
Gainesville District Office of the United Methodist Children's Home - The purpose of this office is to provide financial aid, parenting classes, and counseling services for families with children. It is located in the New Holland United Methodist Church in Gainesville. The workers there screen families and provide a one-time assistance to them. The areas they serve in include the 11 county area around Hall County including Jackson and Banks. Examples of needs include blankets, clothing, particularly baby clothes and diapers, furniture, food, etc. The contact number is 770.531.3063.
First Baptist Church Food Bank - We want to encourage everyone to bring canned goods for collection at our church for this great need in our community. This ministry has become a much needed resource for ever increasing numbers of people especially those with large families. Renee Bryan has graciously been taking these items to the food bank on a routine basis. The hours for the Food Bank are M-W-F from 1-3pm.
Athens Nurses Clinic - is in desperate need of hygiene items for the underserved people in the Athens area Many of the clients are from Jackson County. It would be helpful if the listed toiletry items are placed in a plastic Ziploc bag (washcloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, deodorant, shampoo, hank lotion, razor, shaving lotion, nail file, comb/brush). However, any of these items are accepted without being kitted. Travel sizes of these items are nice for our clients. Contact : Jackie Bryant or Janna Cleveland
